Rossi hoping for more 'gold dust'

21 October 2009

Even Valentino Rossi, with 103 race wins already behind him, admits just how important a result that of the Australian Grand Prix was. As he rode to second place behind Casey Stoner last Sunday, Yamaha team-mate Jorge Lorenzo retired from the race at the first corner to all but seal the 2009 title for the Italian.

Although nothing is certain in motor racing, the result of last Sunday's race at Phillip Island certainly increased the chances of another title for Valentino Rossi who, with a 38-point advantage as his disposal, could pick up the crown in Malaysia this weekend.

"Phillip Island was like gold dust for us in terms of points and now we go to Malaysia, another of my favourite tracks, with our first 'match point'," the fully-aware 30-year-old said.

"Of course anything can happen but it's a great track for me and generally the Yamaha works well there, so we have a good chance; we worked brilliantly in Australia and we know that, if we can do the same at Sepang, then we can have another good weekend."

Although the lead is a healthy one, particularly when taking into account that only a pair of Grands Prix remain on the schedule this season, Rossi will not rest until the title is sealed. "There is no chance to relax," he continued. "Everyone is focused, motivated and excited now that we are at this stage and our number one target for the weekend is to try to close out the championship - we will do our best and see where we are on Sunday night."
