Rossi: Anything can happen

25 August 2009

He holds a fifty-point championship lead over his team-mate with six races to run in the season but reigning Champion Valentino Rossi will not allow complacency to take a place in the Fiat Yamaha team ahead of this weekend's race at Indianapolis, a venue at which the Italian clinched one of his many race wins last year.

The first MotoGP race at Indianapolis last season saw an emotional win being recorded by Rossi en route to the world title; the Urbino rider is well-placed to repeat the feat this year although the championship leader is not prepared to celebrate a title not yet won.

"2008 in Indy was something special because it was the first time we had been there and it is definitely the most famous race track in the world," he said. "We didn't really know what to expect but our bike worked very well and we were fast from the start, in the wet and the dry.

"Every year is a different story, however, so we won't know where we are until we start our work on Friday afternoon. Last year I had a great win but, like everyone, I really hope that that was the only hurricane we ever have to race in and that this time the conditions are more 'normal'!"

The first American race of the year, held at Laguna Seca at the beginning of last month, saw Rossi shadow Dani Pedrosa's Honda to the win although a composed Valentino is not prepared to overindulge the race-winning possibilities of Indiana. "As I said in Brno, it would be stupid for us to relax and consider the championship won," he stressed. "Anything can happen and we know that Lorenzo will be very strong this weekend and determined to make up for the last two races - we must keep focused."
