Suzuki signs Bautista for 2 years

17 August 2009

The Suzuki team has announced that Spain's Álvaro Bautista will be joining the team for the 2010 and 2011 seasons. The 24-year-old will make the jump from the 250cc tier to the top MotoGP class as 125cc Champion of 2006 and 250cc runner-up of 2008.

With the current field comprising of three Spaniards but Toni Elías currently without a ride for next season, Bautista's arrival to MotoGP means he is currently set to be the third Spanish rider on the grid alongside Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa.

Before picking up the 125cc world crown three years ago, Bautista, of Talavera de la Reina in Spain's Toledo province, claimed his country's 125cc championship in 2003. In 2007, he progressed to MotoGP's 250cc before collecting the award for 'Rookie of the Year', based on his results throughout the season.

Bautista collected 250cc's runner-up spot last year and is currently in the same position and fighting for the title in 2009.
