Honda retains Pedrosa and Dovizioso

14 August 2009

Repsol Honda announced at Brno on Friday that it will be employing the services of Dani Pedrosa and Andrea Dovizioso for both the 2010 and 2011 seasons. Rumours had surrounded the future of the latter, who won his first race at Donington Park just under three weeks ago, but the announcement quashes gossip of Jorge Lorenzo's move to the team.

With the MotoGP summer break for 2009 ending as riders hit the track for free practice on Friday, the factory Honda team's announcement in the Czech Republic confirmed that both current riders will stay with the team for at least two more years.

"I'm very pleased to announce that we've reached a basic agreement with Dani Pedrosa and Andrea Dovizioso," said HRC president Tetsuo Suzuki. "Making this announcement now, in August - earlier than we usually do - will allow the riders to focus on the seven remaining races and also allows HRC to focus on the preparation for next season as early as possible.

"Dani and Andrea are two young riders, they're in good condition and are motivated. We're convinced that they can get good results in the second half of the season and next year. Both riders have been performing well with Honda since early in their careers, winning races in the 125cc class, so we want to develop a competitive machine for two riders with a big potential."

It was also confirmed that talks had taken place with another Spaniard: "We spoke with Lorenzo but we eventually concluded that Dani Pedrosa and Andrea Dovizioso would be the best line-up for us and there are no plans to provide another bike for Lorenzo."
