TV viewing figures up on past years

30 July 2009

The amount of drama being provided with the many ups and downs of the 2009 season is being reflected in numbers of television viewers, as recently released figures can prove. Statistics already show a positive rise in comparison with last year and the live British Grand Prix was the most watched ever within the United Kingdom.

As Dorna Sports, commercial rights holder for MotoGP, revealed details on viewing figures this week, the impressive numbers demonstrate that almost a quarter of British TV viewers at the time were watching the BBC's live coverage of Donington Park's final Grand Prix on Sunday, with a peak of 2.9 million making up a total audience share of 23%, double the amount of last year.

Numbers are also up in Spain, as TVE's show was watched by 2.34 million; the subsequent audience share of just under 30% was more than those watching the annual Tour de France cycling race as well as Formula One's Hungarian Grand Prix, which took place on the same day.

The audience total of DSF in Germany was up by some 140,000 in comparison with last season as Italian numbers on channel Italia 1 yielded an impressive 39% share as Valentino Rossi continues to ride towards a sixth world crown and compatriot Andrea Dovizioso achieved a maiden race victory.
