Dani Pedrosa set the fastest lap to top the first practice session at Donington Park on Friday. The Spaniard completed a productive first day on what is the venue's last race before moving to Silverstone in 2010.

With rain throwing the usual variables into the mix at the British Grand Prix, Pedrosa's quickest effort of 1.38.627 placed the Honda at the top of the list on a drying track. 2007 Champion Casey Stoner, who has won the last two races at Donington despite not being a huge fan of the track, was second ahead of reigning Champion and current leader Valentino Rossi's Yamaha.

Andrea Dovizioso placed the second factory Honda in the top four as Jorge Lorenzo's Yamaha, the closest rider to team-mate Rossi in the championship, rounded out the top five despite being almost half a second slower than Pedrosa in the tricky conditions.

James Toseland, the only man contesting his home event this weekend, finished the day 12th for the Tech3 Yamaha satellite team despite finishing the session stranded out on the circuit after an off.

The second hour-long practice period for the British Grand Prix will take place before qualifying on Saturday, getting underway at 9:55 local time (BST / GMT +1).
