Jorge Lorenzo has shot from a dismal eleventh place in Friday's first practice session to the top of the leaderboard on Saturday morning at the Sachsenring. The Fiat Yamaha rider led the way in German from Casey Stoner's Ducati and the Honda of Dani Pedrosa. Valentino Rossi was fifth ahead of qualifying later this afternoon.
Suffering from his heavy crash at Laguna Seca two weeks ago, Lorenzo somewhat pulled a rabbit out of the hat with a best effort of 1.21.882, the fastest lap of the weekend so far on a dry track as opposed to the intermediate conditions of Friday. With Lorenzo the only man through the 1.22.000 barrier, Stoner finished almost four tenths down as Pedrosa - complete with his latest specification of Honda engine - ensured three different types of bike were in the top three positions.
Nicky Hayden was pleased to keep up his good form from the States and is 'best of the rest' behind the leading three, ahead of World Champion and current championship leader Rossi who wound out the top five; the Italian did not enjoy a clean session, however, with an off-track excursion included.
More unfortunate were Britain's James Toseland, who lowsided the Tech3 Yamaha early on and was left out of the running, and Niccolò Canepa's Alice bike which also crashed during practice.
Qualifying for the 2009 Grand Prix of Germany commences at 13:55 local German time (BST +1/ GMT +2) and, like practice, will last for one hour.
