Doctors identify Stoner illness

14 July 2009

Specialists have revealed details of the illness which has been affecting the performance of 2007 Champion Casey Stoner for the last three races. The Australian, currently third in the standings and fighting for the title, is a victim of slight gastritis and mild anaemia, for both of which he will continue to receive treatment.

With an explanation now found for the off-colour 23-year-old, who has been feeling particularly ill after sessions on his bike, the Ducati rider now hopes to be on the mend for the conditions; the first of which, gastritis, is an inflammation of the stomach lining - which explains Stoner's nausea - whilst anaemia involves a lack of oxygen-carrying red blood cells.

"I was in the USA until Saturday to have all the tests," explained Casey, who finished fourth behind Dani Pedrosa and the Yamaha pairing at Laguna Seca. "First of all, I'd like to thank all of the Doctors involved in this: Dr. Ting and Dr. Tuan in the Fremont Surgery Center, Dr. Macchiagodena, Dr. Catani, Dr. Ceccarelli and of course my physiotherapist Freddy.

"Hopefully, step-by-step, I will feel better with their indications. I still don't feel like I am 100 per cent but the biggest problem now is the ribs, which are very painful after the crash in the qualifying; this will be probably another hard weekend but, as always, we will do our best to stay as close as possible to the championship leaders." A victory in Germany may not be possible this weekend, although Stoner took victory at the Sachsenring last year.
