Elias hoping to close in

01 July 2009

Tony Elias was left annoyed after the Dutch Grand Prix as a post-race penalty saw the Spaniard dropped from eighth to twelfth position for what race stewards believed was unsportsmanlike riding in the final turn of the race. With the disappointment aside, however, the 26-year-old is hoping to bounce back in America.

With the United States Grand Prix just four days away, Elias is frustrated to lie twelfth in the championship but hoping that this weekend features an improvement in form. "Even the eighth place I managed before the penalty was below our expectations," Toni said of his race at Assen. "Having said that, I was encouraged by the performance and to have passed so many riders in the race gives me motivation and determination to continue where I left off at Laguna Seca."

As the teams begin to arrive at California's Mazda Raceway, the Honda Gresini squad is planning to make the most of new parts. "I'll receive another frame like the one that I like and that should allow us to work a bit more calmly and make quicker progress in adjusting the setup," Elias explained. "Our recent pace suggests that we're not far from making another step forward - not into the top four just yet but at least a little closer to them."
