101 Rossi's next target

30 June 2009

Having completed his century of race wins at Assen last weekend, Valentino Rossi heads across the Atlantic in bid to notch up a 101st victory at Laguna Seca. With the championship lead now his by five points, the Italian is aware that - with a margin of nine covering the first three riders - relaxation is all but a final priority.

With a superlative battle with team-mate Jorge Lorenzo in Barcelona followed by race win number one-hundred in Holland, Yamaha's Rossi has done no more but cement himself into the record books yet deeper. "The wonderful memory of the 100th win is still fresh but now we have just a few days to recover before the next race, which is hard for everyone," he explained.

"We have to try to relax as much as possible and recharge the batteries a little, because Laguna is always a tough weekend and often very hot. Last year I had a great battle with Stoner and for me it was, for sure, one of the turning points of the championship and a very important win."

With Giacomo Agostini currently heading the table for the most ever wins, having registered an incredible total of 122, how does Valentino rate his own abilities in comparison to those of his compatriot? "It's very difficult to compare," Rossi explained. "First, Agostini has 22 more and that's a lot of races; for sure, Agostini did two classes but at the same time there were less races in one season than now, so I think it's more or less the same amount of races. Unfortunately, I never saw Giacomo race - just on old tapes. I think it's impossible to compare but, anyway, he has 22 more wins so he is the greatest."
