Jorge Lorenzo's front row qualifying position at Assen ensures that the Spaniard is now the only man to have started every race of 2009 so far without at least three bikes in front of him. As Casey Stoner is pushed to fourth place, Spaniard Jorge will begin Saturday's Dutch Grand Prix from third, behind team-mate Valentino Rossi and compatriot Dani Pedrosa.

With Lorenzo, Stoner and Rossi sharing the lead of the World Championship heading into Assen, Lorenzo is particularly keen to enjoy a good start at the Dutch track, which has been modified for this year's race. "I'm happy with the first row, another one for this season, and this is the most important thing with regards to the start of the race tomorrow," the Yamaha rider said after qualifying.

"Of course, I wanted my fourth pole position but I had some problems in the last sector, I'm not sure why yet. We need to continue working to try to improve in that area and to understand the problem, because the race is going to be very hard with quite a few riders up front. We don't know what the weather will be like, so we will have to wait until the warm-up tomorrow morning."
