The Honda Gresini team has completed a deal to sign 250cc Champion Marco Simoncelli for next year. The 22-year-old Italian, who is currently riding for the Metis Gilera team, will make the jump to the top class having claimed twenty-two podium finishes and two 125cc wins before progressing to his current level.
As the Gresini team announced the extension of title sponsor San Carlo for the fourth consecutive year, it also revealed that Simoncelli will be joining the squad to add to what has been described as an 'ambitious' project.
"We're extremely happy to be able to make this important announcement," said team owner Fausto Gresini (seen above with Simoncelli). "Marco has that determination and character that we want from a rider as part of his DNA and we are sure we can look ahead to exciting times with him. He has shown over the past couple of years that he has the ability to be a major force in the premier class, as well as being a great communicator. We have established a good feeling with him already and that facilitated negotiations over a contract that we have signed for 2010. Also, Honda rates Simoncelli highly and believes he is a rider with great potential for the future, so Honda is very pleased that we are welcoming Simoncelli for next season."
The team boss also added that, by bringing his compatriot onboard to ride the bike, the team can make one step closer to proving that 'sport makes life taste better'. "Today is an important day for San Carlo and ourselves, as we wait in expectation of great things together in the future," Gresini continued. "We wish Marco all the best in his bid to fight until the end and successfully defend his 250cc title."
