Rossi ready for Catalan comeback

09 June 2009

Valentino Rossi is hoping to challenge for victory in this weekend's Grand Prix of Catalonia. The Italian, who won in Jerez but has since retired at Le Mans before seeing his seven-year winning streak broken at Mugello, is determined to return to the top step of the podium at the Circuit de Catalunya.

Heading into the sixth race of the season just outside of Barcelona, Rossi lies nine points in arrears to championship leader Casey Stoner and five points behind team-mate Jorge Lorenzo, meaning any member of the trio could be leading by Sunday evening.

"Mugello was disappointing but we still took some good points and now, entering one of the most important phases of the championship, this is very important," said Yamaha rider and reigning Champion Rossi. "We still haven't found the perfect answer to make my M1 exactly how I want but Barcelona is a good track for us so hopefully we can make the final step there.

"Barcelona is, along with Mugello and Phillip Island, one of my favourite tracks and I always love racing there. I have taken one Spanish win so far this season so I am hoping for another this weekend. We need to keep focused and use what we learnt in Mugello to put us in the right shape. Finally I am hoping for good weather because I don't think these flag-to-flag races in the wet and the dry suit me very well!"
