Ducati excited ahead of home event

28 May 2009

Ducati is poised to reap the rewards of home support in Italy this weekend. Although the race at Mugello may be the home Grand Prix for reigning Champion Valentino Rossi, the red bikes are the leading Italian machines in the field and will be looking for pole position and a win from Saturday and Sunday.

With the top three men in the championship separated by just a single point after the French Grand Prix, things couldn't be closer as the campaign heads into Round 5 of 2009. A win for Casey Stoner on the famous track would come as very welcome in his continuing quest to snatch back the crown he won in 2007.

"I can't wait to race again in Mugello," said the Australian. "It's a circuit where I've had good results and some unforgettable moments such as my first ever (125cc) pole position in 2003 and my first pole for Ducati in 2007, even though we just missed out on the podium in that race. Last year I finished second and, considering the progress we've made since then, I'm sure we can be fighting for it again this time. It will be a tough race because the level of the competition is so high, as you can see from the championship standings, and all the home riders will be more determined than ever to do well."

"It is going to be really nice for me to race at Mugello as a Ducati rider," continued American team-mate and 2006 Champion Casey Stoner, who moved from Honda for the beginning of this season. "It is an honour and a privilege for me to now be a part of this team and this tradition; I hope with all my heart that I can be competitive because those fans don't deserve to see a Ducati at the back."
