Valentino Rossi may have been able to look on the bright side after practice at Le Mans on Friday, although the French crowd was unable to do the same as clouds overhead darkened the famous circuit for much of the first practice day. Reigning World Champion and current 2009 leader Rossi ended the day in position six and as many tenths down on fastest man Andrea Dovizioso.
So far in this season, rain has affected three weekends of four, with only Jerez's meeting remaining dry two weeks ago. Qatar's season-opening night race was moved to the Monday as the result of a freak desert storm with qualifying being cancelled completly in Japan a fortnight later due to more torrential downpours.
"We always seem to have bad luck with the weather here!" Rossi laughed after the session. "The conditions weren't easy today; it was quite cold and the track wasn't so good, then it rained and so we couldn't use all of the session. It was still useful to get some laps done in the dry though, even if we couldn't learn as much as we would have liked to today."
The Le Mans MotoGP circuit involves a series of acceleration zone, punctuated by various heavy braking points. "Every lap has it's own small problems and during the first rain break we made some modifications to our setting and actually I was quite confident that we were on the right track." the World Champion continued. "We hoped to get a few more laps before the end of the session once the rain stopped but unfortunately it started again and so we had no real chance to check our work. We know we're fast in the rain but I prefer it dry; the problem is that you never know with Le Mans - the weather seems to change every five minutes!"
