Troy Bayliss was satisfied after completing his three days of testing for the Ducati team in Italy this week. Having not ridden a motorbike since the season-ending Valencia race in 2006, the Australian was back in action at Mugello in order to assist the team with development work for its GP9.
Despite not having been in control of a motorcycle for two and a half years, Bayliss' best lap time of the week came in the form of 1.51.2, two tenths of a second faster than regular Ducati test rider Vittoriano Guareschi. "I've had three good days during which I've felt like a rider again," a happy 40 year-old Bayliss, of New South Wales, said. " It didn't take long to get back into it but, before anyone gets any ideas, I will also say that I'm happy to be heading back to the airport and towards Australia and home this evening - I have no intention of returning to racing!"
Although a full-time ride may not be on the cards, Bayliss - a triple World Superbike Champion - did admit that he will be back on the Ducati sooner rather than later. "Later, in June or July, I'll be back in Europe for a few weeks," he continued. "I will probably test the bike again during that time, I don't know exactly when, but I am very happy to play a part in this project!"
