Three-times World Superbike Champion Troy Bayliss made was present at Mugello on Tuesday in order to help the Ducati team with the ongoing development with its MotoGP GP9 challenger. The Australian, who will continue testing until Thursday this week, retired from full-time racing at the end of last year, having clinched his third world title.
The 40-year-old was back on two wheels for the first time this week on Tuesday, joined at the Italian venue by Ducati test rider Vittoriano Guareschio. "This is literally the first time I've ridden a motorcycle since we unveiled the 1198 after the end of last season at Portimao!", admitted Bayliss after his Tuesday run.
Having moved to MotoGP with Colin Edwards in 2003, three difficult seasons was not part of the game plan although a one-off ride for Ducati at Valencia in 2006 resulted with a magic win from second on the grid, replacing the injured Sete Gibernau.
"It was nice to shake off a bit of rust and, with Mugello being such a physical circuit, it was a good workout!" Troy continued. "The last time I rode a GP machine was at Valencia, which was the 990cc, but the 800cc isn't exactly lacking power and I just spent today getting a feel for it. I can't wait to get back out there tomorrow and on Thursday and hopefully, by the end of the session, I'll be able to give some useful feedback."
