Spanish race fans were delighted to see home favourites Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa finish first and second in qualifying ahead of Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix, with Lorenzo managing to find the edge over his compatriot after final practice. Stoner and Rossi line up third and fourth to confirm a continuation of the title battle.
Lorenzo remained at the top of the official classifications page following his victory in Japan last weekend, setting the all-important pole time of 1.38.933, pipping Pedrosa by just 51 thousandths of a second, even closer than their marginal separation in the final practice session. As the Spanish crowd celebrated the achievement of the Yamaha rider's second consecutive home pole, team-mate Rossi lined up fourth behind other championship contender Casey Stoner.
Randy de Puniet continued an impressive weekend with fifth for LCR Honda as Jerez specialist Capirossi wound up his session behind him. Toni Elias was the third Spaniard in the top ten, in ninth place, with Sete Gibernau 12th on the grid on his homecoming for Onde 2000.
The session did feature an off, however, as the Gresini Honda of Alex de Angelis went down in the closing stages. San Marino's sole representative sustained no considerable injuries and will be starting 15th on Sunday at 1pm local time (GMT +1).
