Valentino Rossi has finished on top of the first practice session in Spain after his Yamaha clocked a lap time just under four tenths of a second faster than Loris Capirossi's Suzuki. Behind the top two was Casey Stoner, with Japan's winner Lorenzo the top Spanish rider in fourth. Andrea Dovizioso rounded out the top five.

Italian Rossi continued Yamaha's strong run with a lap time of 1.39.647 on his way to the top spot, completing 21 laps in the process - which was the highest number of completed individually in the session, despite several riders doing so. The Japanese bike looked to be locking out the top three positions for the majority of the afternoon with Rossi, Lorenzo and Colin Edwards' Tech3 machine at the top of the timesheets for some time, although Stoner took the place as positions reshuffled in the final minutes of the session.

As Edwards, de Puniet, Vermeulen, a surprise Melandri and second home favour Pedrosa rounded out the ten, Sete Gibernau was the third fastest Spanish rider in 12th, making a return trip to his home track. Other Spaniard Toni Elias wound up 15th although 2006 Champion Nicky Hayden had a miserable day; despite also completing 21 laps, Stoner's team-mate finished the session as the penultimate runner in 17th and almost two seconds down on the Australian.

The second free practice session at Jerez will be taking place at 9:05 local time (GMT +1) tomorrow.
