The 2009 season has begun in disappointing fashion after organisers took the decision to cancel the Qatar Grand Prix as rare rainstorms hit the desert venue. The battle could still commence on Monday, however, in which Casey Stoner would start from pole after a Saturday qualifying session which took place in normal circumstances.
With the highly unexpected rain falling on race evening at Losail, both the 125cc and 250cc races had already been shortened in a bid to allow the full show to take place although, with a decision curfew set for 9:30pm and the poor conditions showing no sign of abating, race directors took the decision to cancel 2009's opening race.
All hope is not yet lost for the riders, however, as the race could be moved to Easter Monday for what would be a highly unusual start to the new season.
