'Injury no problem' - Stoner

09 April 2009

Casey Stoner has hushed rumours that his ongoing wrist injury could hinder his performances during races this season. The Australian World Champion of 2007, Stoner suffered offs in the Czech Republic and Italy last year which resulted in pain from a previous injury sustained to his wrist.

Despite an operation in October of last year, worries still surround the Ducati rider, who avoided long-distance runs during tests in Spain and Qatar pre-season. Although his pace over a small number of laps has been electric, Stoner had admitted that the problem is still yet to cease. "My wrist isn't 100 per cent better yet, but the pain is almost zero," he explained to Italy's Gazzetta dello Sport. "We understand the solution to the problem, and it won't cause any repercussions in races." He did continue to say, however, that - despite only a small operation having taken place - the injury will need an 'absurd' nine months to heal.

"People can say what they want," he confidently added. "In Qatar, if I do five or six laps like I did in testing, I could pull out an advantage of six seconds over the others - it's a good gap to manage, but I don't think I'll need it." His lap times continued to impress at the final test in Jerez where, having finished atop the timesheets of the BMW M Award, he walked away with a brand-new, limited edition sports car.

He also talked briefly about his future, and admitted that he would like to contest the legendary Bathurst 1000km Touring Car race once he has reached the conclusion of his career on motorcycles.
