Qatar Night 2: Stoner ahead, Pedrosa hurt

02 March 2009 / Results

After a luckless night with rain in Qatar yesterday, the teams were able to test with improved conditions tonight as 2007 champion Casey Stoner topped the timesheets. The session was marred though by a big accident for Dani Pedrosa which resulted in injuries to both his left knee and hand.

Stoner's fastest time of 1.57.139 at Losail saw him at the top of the classification list, sixth tenths ahead of Rossi's Fiat Yamaha in second place. Whilst the Italian completed 51 laps and concentrated on testing a new electronics system, Stoner's session was divided into a series of runs to enable him to cope better with his painful left wrist.

Colin Edwards' Tech3 Yamaha finished third ahead of Dovizioso and Chris Vermeulen, with the Suzuki rider suffering a crash in the first half of the evening without any major remifications.

The big news of the evening though was the crash of Honda's Dani Pedrosa as the Spaniard lost control of his bike at Turn 10, injuring his left hand as he did in Germany last year. The incident also aggravated an existing injury in Dani's left knee; with the rider suffering an accident for the second consecutive test, he will leave Qatar for hometown Barcelona tomorrow where he will undergo further check-ups.

The final evening of Losail testing takes place tomorrow from 18:00 local time until midnight (GMT +3).
