Valentino Rossi was clearly the fastest rider out on track in Friday morning's free practice session. The Italian completed his fastest lap in 2.02.693 which was almost half a second faster than team mate Jorge Lorenzo. Casey Stoner ended third.

The Malaysian Grand Prix weekend started in dry conditions. Valentino Rossi topped the time sheets for most of the 60-minute session as the freshly crowned world champion is keen to win Sunday's race at Sepang.

Rossi was closely followed by team mate Jorge Lorenzo. The Spaniard completed his fastest lap in the final minutes of the session and was closely followed by last year's winner in Malaysia, Casey Stoner.

There weren't any incidents in the opening session.
