Casey Stoner will start Sunday's race at Phillip Island from pole position. The Australian ended only a tenth of a second in front of Yamaha rider Jorge Lorenzo. The duo will be joined by Nicky Hayden on the front row. Freshly crowned world champion Valentino Rossi will start the race from twelfth as he crashed hard in Saturday's qualifying session.
Casey Stoner dominated most of the qualifying session in front of his home crowd. The only ones able to stay close to the Ducati rider's times were Dani Pedrosa and Valentino Rossi half way into the qualifying session.
With fifteen minutes left in the session Valentino Rossi fell of his bike into the gravel hurting his neck. After docter Claudio Costa checked the world champion the Italian managed to get back on his bike but failed to cross the start finish line before the chequered flag went out in order to complete a flying lap. Rossi had to settle for 12th.
