Rossi takes Indianapolis victory

14 September 2008 / Results / Photos

Valentino Rossi took victory in the first Moto GP event to be held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway after the race was stopped seven laps from its intended finish because of torrential rain and high winds.

Conditions were soaked for the start of the race and Rossi dropped back early on with local hero Nicky Hayden taking the lead on the second lap. Rossi held on, however and made his way back past for the lead on lap 14. From that point the Italian rider just had to keep his bike on the track as he cruised to victory, extending his championship lead to 87 points.

Hayden ended up second, returning to the podium for the first time since his two-race absence with a foot injury. He fended off Jorge Lorenzo to the flag, putting the second Yamaha on the podium in third place.

Casey Stoner ensured his title hopes remained technically possible by trailing home in fourth ahead of Dovizioso, Spies, Guintoli, Pedrosa, Vermeulen and de Angelis.
