Stoner smashes record to take pole

19 July 2008

Casey Stoner took his fifth straight pole position with a breathtaking run of laps at Laguna Seca today. Stoner continued his dominating form this weekend to break the lap record at the track yet again by 1.5s with a stunning lap of 1m20.700s.

Valentino Rossi qualified second, but was still half a second adrift of his rival while Nicky Hayden pulled out a strong lap to take third place on his Michelin tyres.

Jorge Lorenzo continued to ramp up his pace this weekend and qualified fourth, leading the second row ahead of James Toseland and Randy de Puniet. Colin Edwards ended up seventh ahead of Vermeulen and Dovizioso.

Gresini's strong run in the practice sessions came to an end in qualifying when both riders crashed - Shinya Nakano hitting the airfence while de Angelis highsided soon after. Kawasaki replacement rider Jamie Hacking also crashed out as did Toni Elias who ended up tenth.
