Stoner sets early practice pace

Casey Stoner continued his strong form in first practice for this weekend's US Grand Prix at Laguna Seca, setting a new lap record and the fastest time of the session in first practice.

Stoner's lap of 1m21.915s was 0.06s faster than his previous lap record at the circuit. He finished ahead of Valentino Rossi by almost 0.8s. The Yamaha rider covered 33 laps, the most of any rider in the session.

Shinya Nakano was the surprise of the session finishing third fastest ahead of Chris Vermeulen and Marco Melandri. Nicky Hayden rounded off the top six as the fastest Michelin rider.
