Edwards storms to pole at Shanghai

Edwards storms to pole at Shanghai

03 May 2008

Tech 3 Yamaha rider Colin Edwards stormed to a surprise pole position in qualifying today for the Chinese Grand Prix at Shanghai. Edwards took the pole with a storming lap in the final moments of qualifying to edge out Valentino Rossi and Casey Stoner and beat Rossi's 2007 pole record by nearly 0.3s.

Rossi starts from second ahead of fellow Bridgestone-shod Casey Stoner, enjoying an altogether more competitive weekend in China.

All eyes in the early part of the session was on Jorge Lorenzo, however, and how the joint championship-leading rookie would fare on track with a fractured ankle, sustained in a crash yesterday. The Spaniard did surprisingly well while carrying the injury to qualify his bike fourth, despite having to be helped off his bike by engineers after the session.

Joint leader Pedrosa ended up just behind Lorenzo on the grid and Loris Capirossi ended up a strong sixth.

Toseland, Vermeulen and de Puniet rounded off row three while de Puniet, Dovizioso, Hayden, Nakano and Hopkins all suffered falls in the session.
