Lorenzo clinches maiden victory

13 April 2008

Jorge Lorenzo clinched his maiden Moto GP victory after starting from pole for the third time in his debut season in the Portuguese Grand Prix at Estoril. Lorenzo fended off Dani Pedrosa to take the win while Valentino Rossi brought his bike home in third.

Rossi took the lead early on while Lorenzo and Pedrosa fought it out, but the Italian's pace faded in the second half of the race. Meanwhile Lorenzo and Pedrosa continued to fight, swapping positions twice before both eventually passed Rossi.

Rossi fended off further threats from Dovizioso and Hayden, both of whom crashed while they were trying to chase him down.

Colin Edwrads ended up fourth ahead of John Hopkins while Casey Stoner recovered to sixth on his Ducati. James Toseland finished seventh while Vermeulen, Capirossi and Nakano rounded off the top ten.
