Stoner fastest in opening practice

20 July 2007 / Results

Casey Stoner completed the fastest lap time today in the first free practice session at Laguna Seca. The Australian was just ahead of Marco Melandri, Colin Edwards and John Hopkins. Valentino Rossi ended first practice in fifth position.

When today's first session got underway it was the FIAT Yamaha team in front of the rest mainly. Valentino Rossi and Colin Edwards were the fastest riders on track and over a second faster than the rest.

As the session continued the other MotoGP riders came closer to the Yamaha riders and Stoner was the first rider who set a faster time. Not much later Hopkins did the same.

Roger Lee Hayden and Miguel Duhamel both enjoyed their MotoGP debut. Both riders showed a strong performance. Roger Lee was just behind his brother Nicky in tenth, while Duhamel ended 16th.

Alex Hofmann caused a red flag when he fell of his bike in the famous 'Corkscrew'. He touched with Sylvain Guintoli when he fell of. It is at the time of writing uncertain if Hofmann can enter today's second free practice session.
