Edwards takes first pole

Edwards takes first pole

19 May 2007 / Results

Colin Edwards snatched pole off championship leader Casey Stoner in the dying moments of qualifying for the French Grand Prix. The Ducati rider looked set for his first pole of the season before the American put in a 1:33.616s to take top spot on the grid for the Le Mans race tomorrow.

Stoner was just under a tenth off Edwards' pole-snatcher whilst Carlos Checa netted third spot. Valentino Rossi crept up the order to take fourth place on the second Yamaha bike. John Hopkins was fifth fastest and unable to match his performance in the final practice session, where he was top. Toni Elias was a solid sixth for Honda Gresini as the team shows signs of becoming a front-contender whilst Nicky Hayden also proved he's getting back on form with seventh fastest.

Randy de Puniet ended up eighth for Kawasaki having gone fastest half way through the session. Marco Melandri was ninth on the second Gresini whilst Dani Pedrosa rounded off the top ten on his Repsol Honda bike. Loris Capirossi will be disappointed with fifteenth. The top four were all within two tenths of a second of each other, which bodes well for a close race tomorrow.
