Rossi grabs pole with sensational time

Valentino Rossi will start Sunday's Chinese Grand Prix from pole position. The Yamaha rider was able to set a time almost a second faster than second place John Hopkins. Rossi's team-mate Colin Edwards will start the race from third. 

While the difference between first and second place is almost a second, the gap from second to fourteenth is very similar, just over a second where things are much tighter. Hopkins was the quickest early on in qualifying along with Casey Stoner who suffered a mechanical problem with his bike twenty minutes before the end of the session. He scampered back to the pits to get on the spare.

Rossi came out in the final ten minutes to set an absolutely dominant time and will start ahead of Hopkins, Edwards, Stoner and Pedrosa.
