Rossi storms to victory in Jerez

Valentino Rossi spoiled the Spanish party at the Jerez Grand Prix by denying Dani Pedrosa a win in front of his home crowd. The five-time world champion eased to victory after overtaking Pedrosa's Repsol Honda on the first lap having started alongside him on the front row.

The final spot on the podium was filled by Rossi's team-mate Colin Edwards who managed to get past another Spaniard Carlos Checa to disappoint the home fans once again. Checa ended up sixth whilst the second highest Spanish runner was fourth place Honda rider Toni Elias.

The victory means that Rossi leapfrogs ahead of Casey Stoner at the top of the championship table. The Australian Ducati rider dominated in Qatar two weeks ago yet his fifth today means he loses out to the Italian Yamaha rider.

"It was a great, great race for us," Rossi told BBC Sport. "I did some small modifications after the warm-up and the bike was very fast from the beginning.

"The tyres worked very well, I went in front from the start and it was a perfect race for us."

Pedrosa said: "To be second here is very good. We are on the podium again. I think we did a good weekend and the people here were unbelievable."
