Ilmor withdraws from MotoGP… for now

15 March 2007

MotoGP's latest team Ilmor will not participate in the upcoming race at Jerez the team confirmed today. The team had to withdraw from the MotoGP championship because it could not find financial backing in time.

For Ilmor rider and Jeremy McWilliams the announcement came as a surprised. "I am numb at the moment. It seems they are ceasing their racing activities because of lack of budget," McWilliams told the BCC. "Everyone knows Ilmor were looking for a big sponsor. We have not had as much time on the race track as we needed for all that to fall into place.

"But there are always other opportunities around the corner and I will not let this deter me. I will be back on a bike somewhere in the near future, you can be sure of that. But I would like to work with the Ilmor team and help them develop their project with the V4 engine."

At Ilmore a spokesperson confirmed the team did not pull the plug on MotoGP, but it is suspending its race programme as the team searches for a financial solution.
